Testimonials
Mary* - Emergency Shelter Client

Mary grew up with an abusive step-mother and later married
an abusive partner. After three years of marriage,
Mary and her toddler fled to a domestic violence shelter
facility in Dallas and for safety reasons decided to
relocate to Fort Worth, seeking the services of Union Gospel
Mission, a homeless shelter with whom SafeHaven has
developed a collaborative working relationship. It was
during this transition that Mary's life would change forever
and SafeHaven provided her with a case manager and
subsequent referral to our emergency shelter facility.
Throughout her stay, Mary's main objective was to become
self sufficient and provide a better lifestyle for her young
daughter.
Jane* - Transitional Living Client

For years, Jane’s
husband
was mentally and physically abusive toward her. Seeking refuge from the abuse, Jane entered the shelter
and found a job. After leaving the shelter,
Jane entered our transitional program and continued participating in
SafeHaven’s counseling services. While in the transitional program, Jane
attended classes offered through Ladder Alliance, a program offering free
basic computer instruction and job search skills. With hard work and
diligence, she graduated our transitional program with $20,000 in savings,
improved parenting skills and an incredibly improved sense of self-worth.
Claudia* - Bilingual Services Client
Claudia,
already a mother of three young daughters, was several months
pregnant when she was placed at a shelter in another county. Because she
did not speak English and the shelter did not offer bicultural and bilingual
services, Claudia was transferred to SafeHaven’s emergency shelter
facility. Upon entry,
she was quiet and extremely nervous, but as time continued she began to feel
more comfortable and started actively participating in the programs and
services available to her. Recently, Claudia delivered a healthy baby girl.
Regardless
of her circumstances, Claudia, only 24 years old, accomplished many of her
goals in a short amount of time. She has taken care of legal issues,
established medical care, obtained food stamps, and begun attending classes
to learn English. Claudia has exhibited bravery throughout her stay at
SafeHaven and continues to move forward. Soon, she will be moving into her
own residence and will begin her
new life.
Stacey* - Educational Services Client

At a pregnant and parenting teen support
group, Stacey, a high school senior listened to a SafeHaven facilitator
discussing the different
types of abuse and the dynamics of an unsafe relationship. She
realized that her boyfriend and father of her baby, was indeed an abuser.
He often humiliated and intimidated her. He accused her of cheating
and damaged her self-esteem. He even used her pregnancy to control her
and prevent her from leaving him. After the support group, Stacey
spoke with the facilitator and together, the two created a safety plan and
filed paperwork for a protective order. The facilitator continued to
work with Stacey and her mom during the school year. In the spring,
Stacey graduated with a new baby and a new violence free life.
