Elizabeth Bassett at the Fort Worth Business Press wrote an article in this week's paper that covered the economic abuse that often occurs within violent relationships. Our own Maria Field, clinical services director, was quoted. She said: “This economic abuse is a very powerful thing in clients’ lives, and that’s just one part of abuse."
She also told Bassett the following:
On top of physical and emotional abuse, economic abuse is a common thing for victims of domestic violence to deal with, Field said. This abuse, like the physical and emotional kind, is based on control, and one of the goals for professionals who help victims create escape plans is to create some savings, however small, that can be put toward food, clothing and shelter.
