Fort Worth shelter suffers extensive damage from broken pipe

photo-2Early Tuesday, March 4, SafeHaven’s Fort Worth shelter suffered significant water damage after a fire sprinkler pipe burst. The entire lower floor, which holds the shelter’s daycare, activity room and FWISD self-contained school, sat under about six inches of standing water and remains completely unusable with walls, ceilings, fixtures and furnishings destroyed. Approximately ⅓ of the bedrooms on the second floor also sustained damage and are uninhabitable at this time.  Computers in both the school and staff offices were also damaged.

How much of the non-profit’s two shelters was damaged remains to be seen, since some of the building cannot safely be accessed at this time, but administrators estimate up to ⅓ of the building was damaged.  Portions of the ceiling collapsed, many of the walls are soaked and will need to be torn down to the studs and rebuilt, tiles in bedrooms are peeling up, and computers were filled with water.

Thankfully, no one was injured and all clients moved to safe, dry rooms, either in the Fort Worth or Arlington shelters.

“We want people to know that although the damage is extensive, we are still here for those who need help,” said SafeHaven CEO Mary Lee Hafley.  “No one is going to be turned away who needs safety and protection from domestic violence.  If you are in an abusive situation, call our hotline at 1-877-701-SAFE and we will get you out.”
