Tracy Rector – Board Excellence Award

This National Volunteer Appreciation Week, SafeHaven is honoring the volunteers that allow us to continue working toward our mission.

Nine volunteers or volunteer groups were honored with awards at SafeHaven's "Round of Applause" event last Thursday, but we also want to let you get to know each of these incredible advocates for SafeHaven.

Let's take a look at our Board Excellence Award winner, Tracy Rector. While all board members are amazing, this particular award goes to the board member who is selfless in their behind-the-scenes work with little to no credit and tirelessly champions SafeHaven in the community.

Name: Tracy Rector

Where do you volunteer at SafeHaven? Board of Directors

Why did you decide to get involved with SafeHaven? During the past five years of serving on the board for SafeHaven, I was often reminded of the importance of the work our staff, board and volunteers do every day to help our clients have freedom from domestic violence. I love being a part of this agency that is on the cutting edge of addressing intimate partner violence through community partnerships and evidence-based practices. SafeHaven recognizes the important role volunteers have in the work they do, and I feel like I am able to make a difference.

What has been your favorite memory working with SafeHaven? As Board Chair last year, I started the "Board Breakfast Club" where board members prepare and serve a hot breakfast on a Saturday morning to our clients in one of the shelters. I enjoyed helping at the breakfast last fall where board members served breakfast tacos to clients. We were able to interact with the women and children living in shelter. We saw the faces of our clients, heard their stories and received first-hand the gratitude they felt toward SafeHaven for helping them during this difficult time in their lives. I was inspired to continue the work we do after witnessing our clients' strength and perseverance.

If you could choose any celebrity to volunteer with you for a day, who would it be and why? I would love to travel the country and the world with Nicole Kidman as she serves in her role as UN Women Goodwill Ambassador. She is an outspoken advocate for women and girls standing up for their right to live without violence.
